The HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has issued proposals for the next edition of electronic health record technology certification criteria.

This is the first time ONC has proposed an edition of certification criteria separate from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ “meaningful use” regulations, according to HHS. ONC is taking a new approach that includes rulemaking that happens more often, incrementally. The goal is to allow ONC to update certification criteria more often.

The 2015 edition of the criteria would be voluntary, and developers whose products are already certified under the 2014 rules would not need to re-certify, according to HHS.
