The Senate voted 78 to 17 June 5 to confirm Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be the new secretary of the Health and Human Services Department.

Burwell, the former director of the Office of Management and Budget, replaces outgoing the previous secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., a member of the committee, said when she was confirmed by the Senate Homeland SEcurity and Governmental Affairs Committee in May that Burwell’s proven leadership and extensive background in the public and private sector make her an excellent choice for the position.

“During this critical period for the Department of Health and Human Services, it is imperative that we have an individual with tremendous leadership and vision to navigate the continued implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the advancement of American’s health and quality of life,” Carper said.
