The Senate on Thursday unanimously confirmed Army Gen. David Petraeus to head the CIA.
The measure passed, 94-0.
Petraeus replaces outgoing CIA Director Leon Panetta, who Friday becomes Defense secretary. Petraeus said he would resign his post as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, said in a statement that Petraeus had earned bipartisan respect during his time in the military.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said in a statement that few Americans have contributed more to the war on terror than Petraeus and that he had confidence in his leadership skills.
"Our nation is fortunate that General Petraeus has chosen to continue the fight against America's enemies in his new capacity as CIA director," Cornyn said.
