GSA chief touts agency’s response to Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy lashed New York City this week, employees from the General Services Administration braved the storm to open up the Brooklyn Courthouse to serve as a shelter for emergency workers.

GSA also provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency with 1,000 chainsaws to help with relief efforts in Pennsylvania and sent 34 shipments of generators, pumps and portable toilets to storm-affected areas, acting administrator Dan Tangherlini said in a blog post Wednesday.

He said more than 4,000 GSA employees teleworked while others inspected federal facilities or contributed to the agency’s Disaster Relief Program.

The agency is also working to secure 100,000 square feet of temporary office space for FEMA offices in storm-affected areas.

“During a Hurricane like Sandy, our role as a key support agency for the federal government is more important than ever,” Tangherlini said.

He said GSA employees were also monitoring thousands of federal facilities to assess any damage and make sure any buildings temporarily closed are reopened quickly.

“I want to assure the American people that all of us will be doing everything we can in the days and weeks ahead to assist in the recovery,” Tangherlini said.
