Pay emerges as top gripe in latest employee satisfaction survey

Employees’ satisfaction with their pay declined more than any other job satisfaction factor over the last year, according to results of the 2012 Employee Viewpoint Survey conducted by the Office of Personnel Management.

Satisfaction with pay fell 3.7 percentage points to 58.8 percent of responses, down from 62.5 percent in the 2011 survey. Since 2010, satisfaction with pay has declined seven percentage points from 65.8 percent.

A federal pay-scale freeze has been in effect since January 2011 and is due to continue at least through March.

The viewpoints survey of more than 687,000 employees was the largest administered since it was launched in 2002, according to an OPM statement released last week.

Overall, employees responded more positively to only six of 77 questions.

The largest increase in satisfaction was with telework, with 72.8 percent of employees saying they are satisfied with their agencies’ telework programs — an increase of 3.1 percentage points from 69.7 percent in 2011.

The survey shows 23.7 percent of respondents telework — ranging from 2.6 percent who telework three or more days per week to 9.6 percent who telework very infrequently or on an unscheduled or short-term basis.

The most positive responses — 96.5 percent — were in answer to the question, “When needed, I am willing to put in the extra effort to get a job done.”
