The federal Chief Information Officers council is creating an innovation committee that will identify and analyze cutting-edge technology, according to agency officials.

Kevin Cox, assistant director for Information Security Technologies at the Justice Department, said at the Federal Mobile Computing Summit in Washington Tuesday that the committee would look ahead 18 months to three years and identify potential uses and problems associated with the technology being developed, including mobile devices.

“They have proposed the development of an innovation committee that, in addition to mobility, will take a look at a lot of new technologies coming down the pipe,” Cox said.

Robert Palmer, the director of information assurance at the Department of Homeland Security, said the new committee will be a logical step forward in the development of mobile device standards and best practices.

“They are looking at how to best set that up,” Palmer said.

There is no set date for the formation of the committee, according to the officials.
