The Postal Service has picked James Cochrane, the vice president of its product information department, to be its new acting chief information officer, according to the agency.

Cochrane led agency efforts to place bar codes on all postal products and use the resulting information to boost efficiency as well as form the basis for predictive analytics at the agency, according to the Postal Service.

He has worked at the Postal Service for 39 years, according to the agency.

Cochrane will oversee the integration of technology in the Postal Service’s effort to deliver 170 billion pieces of mail to 150 million addresses within the United States every year, according to a Sept. 30 letter from Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to employees.

The previous CIO, Ellis Burgoyne, announced his retirement in late August and officially stepped down at the end of September. He worked at the Postal Service for 35 years, according to the agency.
