The legislation that ended the government shutdown Wednesday night also directed the inspector general of the Health and Human Services department to look into fraud safeguards under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The legislation directed the IG to “submit a report to congress regarding the effectiveness of the procedures and safeguards provided under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for preventing the submission of inaccurate or fraudulent information by applicants for enrollment in a qualified health plan offered through an American Health Benefit Exchange.”

The IG would have until July 1 to submit the report.

Donald White, HHS IG spokesman, said the IG “is carefully reviewing the statute and will of course take appropriate actions to fulfill our mandate.”
