Agencies will be required to get 20 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by fiscal 2020, according to a presidential memo released Thursday.

Agencies have already made great strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing energy consumption, President Obama said in the memo, but must do more to become more environmentally sustainable.

Agencies should consider renewable energy projects not just at federal facilities, but on the sites of formerly contaminated lands, landfills and mines, according to the memo.

Agencies must reach 10 percent renewable energy use by fiscal 2015, 15 percent by 2016 and 17.5 percent by 2018, before reaching the 20 percent goal in fiscal 2020, according to the memo.

Agencies also released sustainability plans for fiscal 2013 on Thursday, laying out plans to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become more environmentally sustainable.

The memo builds on a 2009 executive order setting targets for reducing direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 28 percent by 2020.
