The National Security Agency is working to build a computer that would be able to more easily break internet encryption, according to documents provided to the Washington Post by former contractor Edward Snowden.

The search for a quantum computer is part of a nearly $80 million research program to develop ways to break into secure networks and intercept encrypted communications, according to the documents. In theory, quantum computers can break encryption much faster than traditional computers.

釘y concentrating on the means of communication, the network itself, and network links rather than end systems, [owning the net] research manipulates equipment hardware and software to control an adversary痴 network, the documents said.
