A group of IT companies and organizations have formed an advisory group to consult with Congress and agencies on cloud computing and other IT issues.
Steve O’Keeffe, the founder of the public-private IT partnership Meritalk, announced the formation of the Cloud Computing Caucus Advisory Group at the Meritalk Cloud Computing Brainstorm on Jan. 16.
The advisory group is made up of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Meritalk and IT hardware company EMC.
He said there are many members of Congress who are not well-informed on IT issues and how it can improve agency operations. “The advisory group will play a very important role in keeping congress informed on issues of cloud computing,” O’Keeffe said.
One of the biggest challenges in implementing cloud computing is changing the culture to adapt to the quick movement and use of data, according to David McClure, the associate administrator of the Office of Citizen Services and innovative Technologies at GSA, who spoke in a separate session of the event.
It isn’t just a matter of adding cloud technologies, he said. Cloud offers a chance to rethink business processes overall, but not all agency managers are comfortable doing that.
“Our big challenge is the inability to redesign workflow in concert with cloud computing,” he said.
