A new policy will make lost or stolen CAC cards harder to replace. (Air Force)
Starting in late March or early April, all service members and Defense Department civilians will have to produce documentation to get replacement CACs, a defense official told Military Times.
While current policy already calls for people to submit documentation to get a new card, not all CAC issuing stations have required all of the paperwork to get a new card.
“Procedurally, most ID card issuance officials have been requiring it and have been scanning it into the system,” said Sam Yousef of the Defense Human Resources Activity. “The big change that we’ll see in the next couple of months is, that scan through the system will be a mandatory scan.”
That means at all CAC stations, you will need to provide a signed letter on official letterhead explaining how your card was lost or stolen or a police report that documents the theft of your card, Yousef said.
“Some stations are appointment-only, but a lot them operate, I’d say, similar to a DMV [Department of Motor Vehicles] where you’d be served as you show up,” he said.
The CAC crackdown comes a month after the Defense Department issued a new policy on identifications, Yousef said. It is also meant to deter people from having more than one card.
“What we want to make sure isn’t happening is folks just wanting to get a second Common Access Card just to have a second Common Access Card,” Yousef said. “We just think that the greater visibility and accountability by requiring some sort of documentation will help ensure that doesn’t happen.”
