Rules for success in cloud migrations

Federal agencies are having success with cloud implementations, but there are some hazards, according to a recent MeriTalk survey, reported in GovHealthIT. Some simple rules emerge from the responses, however, which can greatly increase the chances of a winner.

Start by defining objectives, MeriTalk advises. Then calculate the costs and likely return on investment to decide whether the move is worthwhile.

An aggressive review of the business case also helps to determine whether it is robust enough to truly support the migration, the firm found.

Procurement poses special challenges where the cloud is concerned, so agency managers should monitor the process more closely than they otherwise might.

Finally, expect some things to go wrong. Agencies that are prepared for hiccups are more likely to overcome them.
