Postal Service Employees abused Postal Service travel cards and spent thousands of dollars on gambling and personal expenses, according to a series of reports by the Postal Service Inspector General and reported on by the Washington Examiner.
The reports detail several instances of charge card abuse, including one manager who used her card to withdraw $32,000 in order to gamble, and another who used her card to withdraw $2,400 in cash for gambling.
Both employees ended up paying back the Postal Service for the amount taken from the charge card accounts. But the reports show several other employees who used charge cards to obtain cash advances, pay bills or rent cars for personal use.
The Postal Service takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and investigates all claims and takes appropriate action, spokeswoman Toni Delancey said.
DeLancey said the Postal Service - which has about 500,000 employees - does not receive appropriations and so no taxpayer dollars were spent. Further, she said, the charge cards are assigned to individual employees who must document business-related charges. If an employee cannot prove that a given charge is legitimate, the employee must pay, she said.
“The allegations regarding the individuals referenced in the Examiner article do not fairly represent the Postal Service nor the actions of its employees,” Delancey said.
