The Veterans Affairs Department has paid out more than $200 million in wrongful death payments in the 10 years after Sept. 11, 2001, according to a new report.
The Center for Investigative Reporting released a report showing the VA paid the sums to more than 1,000 families for deaths from causes such as suicide and cancer that went undetected by doctors.
The median payment in VA wrongful death cases was $150,000, according to the report.
“It wasn’t about the money, I just thought somebody should be held accountable,” 86-year-old Doris Street told the Center for Investigative Reporting. Street received a $135,000 settlement in 2010 as compensation for the 2008 death of her brother, Carl Glaze.
