Federal executives at the veterans Affairs Department would not receive any bonuses during fiscal year 2015, under legislation that passed the House April 30.
Rep. Keith Rothfus, R-Pa., added the legislation as an amendment to a military construction and Veterans Affairs Department appropriations bill, which passed 416 to 1.
“VA executives need to take responsibility, fix the problems, and do their jobs,” Rothfus said on the House floor April 30. The VA paid senior executives $2.3 million in bonuses in fiscal 2012, he added.
Jennifer Mattingley, the legislative director for the Senior Executives Association, said the House appropriations committee has already recognized the VA’s efforts to improve performance and reduce bonuses.
“Senior Executives are subjected to rigorous annual performance reviews that take into account both the individual performance of a Senior Executive and the organizational performance that is within the area of control of that individual,” Mattingley said.
