The Senate Finance Committee voted 21 to 3 to approve Office of Management and Budget Director Sylvia Burwell as the new secretary of the Health and Human Services Department.
Burwell would replace outgoing secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The nomination, which the committee approved May 21, now moves to the full Senate for a vote.
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., a member of the committee, said Burwell’s proven leadership and extensive background in the public and private sector make her an excellent choice for the position.
“During this critical period for the Department of Health and Human Services, it is imperative that we have an individual with tremendous leadership and vision to navigate the continued implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the advancement of American’s health and quality of life,” Carper said.
