IG: CMS must do better at identifying EHR vulnerabilities

The Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services need to do a better job of adjusting practices to better prevent fraud in electronic health records, according to the Health and Human Services Department Inspector General.

Contractors have also not adjusted their practices for identifying fraud and investigating vulnerabilities in their EHRs, according to the report released May 27.

“Few contractors reviewed EHRs differently from paper medical records,” the report said.

Only about one quarter of hospitals that received HER incentive funds had policies on preventing fraud vulnerabilities in it’s HER systems, according to the report.
