The Senate confirmed San Antonio mayor Julian Castro July 9 to be the next secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department
The Senate voted 71 to 26 to confirm Castro, who replaces former HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, who has been nominated to become the next administrator of the Office of Management and Budget.
President Obama said in a statement following the confirmation vote that Castro is a proven leader and a champion for safe and affordable housing and sustainable neighborhoods.
“I know that together with the dedicated professionals at HUD, Julian will help build on the progress we’ve made battling back from the Great Recession - rebuilding our housing market, reducing homelessness among veterans, and connecting neighborhoods with good schools and good jobs that help our citizens succeed.
Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Castro has applied great energy and skill to meeting the challenges of urban renewal and has been a strong advocate for affordable housing.
“I look forward to working closely with Secretary Castro to address critical issues facing homeowners and renters in Maryland and throughout the country and to support federal investment in strong neighborhoods where opportunities abound and where residents have what they need to make it in America,” Hoyer said.
