The head of the Connecticut insurance exchange has been tapped to become the chief executive officer of the federal health insurance exchange system and Healthcare.gov, according to an agency announcement.
Kevin Counihan will serve as the marketplace CEO and will be responsible for leading the marketplace, managing relationships with state marketplaces and running the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, according to an Aug. 26 announcement by the Health and Human Services Department.
“We are building strong teams with the focus and know-how necessary to advance our mission and deliver impact for the people we serve,” HHS secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a press release.
“Counihan brings additional operational and technological expertise to the position and will be a clear, single point of contact for streamlined decision-making.”
Counihan said in a statement that it was an honor to be chosen and he looks forward to the challenges ahead and building upon his prior experience running the health exchange in Connecticut.
