The Association of Government Accountants — in partnership with audit, tax and advisory firm Grant Thornton LLP — has released "The CFO in Transition," its 21st annual chief financial officer survey.

Launched at a breakfast featuring speakers Dave Mader, controller for the Office of Management and Budget, and Jim Taylor, managing director of Grant Thornton's Public Sector unit, the report looks at evolving roles and emerging challenges for federal CFOs within changing operational and political environments.

These financial management professionals hope to be seen by the Trump administration as strategic advisers empowered to drive positive change, and the survey offers suggestions for the incoming administration on initiatives that pair agency priorities and data analysis tools.

The survey, conducted over the summer of 2016, offers several takeaways on assigning the responsibility for enterprise risk management, the importance of building on the Obama administration’s push toward shared services, the valuable mission support found in the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014, and the way budgetary certainty could allow CFOs to focus on larger, more critical analytical and planning issues.
