HHS contractor to settle self-reported False Claims allegations

A provider of laboratory animal goods and services has reached a settlement with the U.S. government following allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by improperly billing the National Institutes of Health.

Charles River Laboratories International Inc. — a for-profit corporation headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts — charged the NIH for labor and associated costs of employees at its Raleigh, N.C., and Kingston, N.Y., facilities services, despite the fact Charles River individuals did not render any of the claimed services. Charles River provides the NIH with services relating to the development, maintenance and distribution of colonies of animals, as well as the provision of laboratory animals.

Following a self-disclosure to the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services, Charles River has agreed to pay $1.8 million to the government.
