A government contractor who bribed a U.S. Postal Service officer to earn mail delivery contracts pleaded guilty to federal charges on Feb. 10.

Barbara Murphy, owner of ER&R Transportation and MC&G Trucking LLC of Rocky Mount, N.C., admitted that from January 2011 to July 2012, she bribed then USPS contracting officer representative Gregory Cooper with cash, college tuition for his daughter, car loan payments, a plane ticket, fitness equipment and payments on five cell phone bills in order to secure favorable treatment for contracts.

Cooper, in turn, recommended Murphy's businesses for 10 delivery contracts and advised her on how to address performance issues related to her contracts, Department of Justice prosecutors said.

Cooper received a 15-month prison sentence for accepting bribes on Nov. 15.

Murphy admitted to the scheme as part of a plea deal and will be sentenced on June 13.
