President Obama nominated current General Services acting Administrator Denise Turner Roth to be the new head of the agency.

Roth had been appointed the acting administrator at GSA in February after former administrator Dan Tangherlini officially left the agency. She first became deputy administrator in March 2014.

President Obama said in a statement that Roth has helped make the agency more efficient, innovative and effective and she is a capable leader with management experience that will serve well in her position.

"Just over one year ago, Roth assumed the role of Deputy Administrator at GSA, providing the organizational leadership to improve performance throughout the agency. Roth helped eliminate the broad duplication of administrative services by consolidating the agency's IT, HR, Administrative and Financial functions, helping to build a stronger and more efficient GSA while saving taxpayers $200 million in the next eight years," he said.

"As head of GSA, Roth will continue to cultivate the agency's culture of continuous evaluation and improvement to deliver the greatest possible value to government and the American people," Obama added.

Roth said the nomination is a vote of confidence in the ability of the workers at GSA.

I am honored to lead GSA in transforming the way our government serves the American people. Today GSA is smarter and stronger, and I look forward to building on this momentum -- creating new opportunities for the federal government and the nation."

Prior to joining GSA, Roth served as the city manager of Greensboro, N.C., and helped reorgane city departments and divisions to promote efficiency and improve service delivery.
