Satire website The Onion took aim at the Postal Service On Jan. 21, poking fun at the dwindling number of people sending birthday cards and paying bills through the agency.

In an effort to highlight their longstanding contributions and loyalty to the agency, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a new line of commemorative stamps Wednesday honoring those Americans who still use the U.S. Postal Service. "Our latest series of Forever stamps recognizes the remaining citizens who continue to support the USPS by physically sending their bills, rent checks, and thank-you cards via traditional mail," said Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe.

Ouch.

The financial future of the Postal Service has been a topic of great debate recently. The agency has cut its workforce, modernized its operations and set about consolidating its facilities and processing centers in a bid to cut costs.

In 2014, the agency actually made a $1.4 billion operating profit before it was forced to prepay its retiree health benefits (about $5.5 billion a year). While traditional letters and cards sent through the mail is down, package delivery is way way up.

But the Postal Service knows how to take a joke. It tweeted this in response to The Onion.

"We can laugh with the best of them," Postal Service spokeswoman Toni DeLancey said.

Your move, The Onion.
