With the dog days of summer upon the capital region, the Office of Personnel Management wants to remind agencies to beat the heat.

One of the ways agencies can do that, acting OPM Director Beth Cobert said, is by giving employees more flexibility when it comes to teleworking and adjusting schedules.

In a July 22 memo, Cobert said her office is partnering with the Department of Health and Human Services to remind agencies the best ways to protect its employees during the sweltering summer.

"During days with severe heat and humidity, agencies are reminded of OPM's workplace flexibilities that may be used to reduce health risks," she said in the memo. "With supervisory approval and to prevent work disruptions, a telework-ready employee may telework from home on a day when air quality conditions are poor."

The OPM chief also said that agencies should review their policies on allowing employees to adjust arrival and departure times to best avoid the hottest parts of the day.

In addition, the memo provided a slate of information on everything tips to prevent heat-related illness to where to find weather alerts.
