The National Institute of Standards and Technology appointed a new chairman for its Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board (ISPAB), a committee of public- and private-sector information security professionals that advise NIST and the federal government on security and privacy issues.

Christopher Boyer, assistant vice president for global public policy for AT&T Services, stepped into the chairman role on May 1 and will serve through the term's end in June 2020. He has been a voting member of the board since 2012.

The board — established by the Computer Security Act of 1987 and given additional authorities in the 2002 Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) — advises NIST, the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget. Those recommendations inform (non-classified) federal privacy policies and best practices and NIST's voluntary frameworks for the private sector.

The group also authors an annual privacy report for the secretaries of DHS and the Commerce Department, directors of OMB and NSA and Congress.

Boyer takes over the chairmanship from Peter Weinberger, a senior software engineer at Google. He will take up the gavel at the board's next quarterly meeting, set for June 15-17.
