Google Maps is adding data from the Federal Railroad Administration in a joint effort to reduce the number of people killed in highway-rail collisions, according to a post on the Transportation Department's Fast Lane blog. In 2014, there were 270 such fatal accidents.

The data will add the locations of the nation's 250,000 railroad crossing into Google's maps.

"Adding railroad crossing data to smart phone mapping applications just makes sense – it means supplying drivers and passengers with additional cues that they are approaching a crossing," wrote acting FRA Administrator Sarah Feinberg. "For drivers and passengers who are driving an unfamiliar route, traveling at night, or who lose situational awareness at any given moment, receiving an additional alert about an upcoming crossing could save lives."
