An Army sergeant pleaded guilty on July 8 to a bribery scheme that involved stealing fuel from an Afghan base.

Sheldon J. Morgan, 36, struck a plea deal with federal prosecutors in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he was charged with conspiracy to receive bribes and defraud the United States.

Morgan admitted in court that from on two occasions in December 2010, while a specialist charged with overseeing fuel distribution at forward operating base Fenty near Jalalabad, he arranged to sell 5,000 gallons of fuel to a translator working for an Afghan trucking company.

In return for the fuel, Morgan was paid $5,000 per truckload, which was wired to a bank account outside the U.S., opened in Morgan's wife's name.

Prosecutors said that Morgan netted up to $37,300 from the scheme. The sergeant is the eighth guilty plea related to a fuel theft and bribery at the Afghan base occurring from June 2009 and April 2012.

Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 21.
