The Office of Management and Budget announced July 19 that the current acting chief information security officer, Grant Schneider, would be officially taking on the role.

“Grant Schneider brings extensive cybersecurity experience well aligned to lead efforts in securing government systems from cyberattacks,” said Margaret Weichert, deputy director for management at OMB. “As chief information security officer, Grant will play a key role in making sure the federal government’s technology networks are safe and secure.”

Schneider is also currently the senior director for cybersecurity policy at the National Security Council.

The federal CISO position is a recent creation, first held in September 2016 by Brig. Gen. Gregory Touhill, who was not asked to remain on after the presidential transition in January 2017.

Jessie Bur covers federal IT and management.
