The famously pinstripe-suited Kudlow would succeed Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive who is leaving the post in a dispute over Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.
Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, has been the leading internal opponent to Trump’s planned tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, but Trump reiterated Tuesday he will be imposing tariffs in the coming days.
Trump spoke shortly after a spokeswoman for House Speaker Ryan said the GOP leader was “extremely worried” about the tariffs setting off a trade war and had urged the White House “to not advance with this plan.”
President Trump summoned steel and aluminum executives to the White House and told them that next week he will levy penalties of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports.
