A U.S. Postal Service carrier is accused of stealing a Miami-Dade County mail-in ballot, 10 gift cards and four prepaid debit cards earlier this month, federal authorities said.
Leslie McCrae Dowless Jr., 63, was arrested less than a week after the state elections board decided his work on behalf of Republican congressional candidate Mark Harris tainted his apparent victory in November's general election and a new election was required, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said.
In a statement, Mark Harris said he's skipping the upcoming re-do election in North Carolina's 9th congressional district for health reasons. He did not mention the alleged ballot fraud scandal.
