Military and veterans policies will play a role in the debate over who should serve as commander-in-chief. The number of lawmakers with military experience has steadily declined since the 1970s. The Senate voted down a resolution to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria amid dozens of attacks from Iran-backed proxies in the war-torn country. Nearly 90% say the United States must do more to honor its promises to protect Afghans who worked closely with U.S. military forces. Only one of the 13 troops killed has received the honor since the 2021 terrorist attack. The poll comes two years after the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan in August 2021. By Linley Sanders
