One lawmaker wants to know what steps the Office of Personnel Management taking to avoid a repeat of the massive data breach that exposed the personal info of millions of feds.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., wrote in a June 8 letter to OPM Director Katherine Archuleta the December data breach – which went undetected until April – was the second time in less than a year that OPM was unable to protect the data of federal employees.
“I am writing to understand what immediate steps you are taking to prevent a recurrence of such an event and what you are doing to ensure that the data that was accessed cannot be used to threaten the financial security of the victims,” Van Hollen wrote.

He said it was “particularly disturbing” to know that OPM had known about the data breach since April but only chose to disclose the breach June 4.
“Millions of federal employees whose Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and other vital financial information are entrusted to your care are vulnerable to serious harm due to this breach,” Van Hollen said.
