Dr. David Shulkin has been nominated to be the next under secretary for health at the Veterans Affairs Department.
Shulkin is president of Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, New Jersey. He has served on a number of East Coast medical boards and organizations, including CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and Chief Medical Officer of several Philadelphia hospitals, according to a report in Military Times.
If approved for the VA nomination, he would fill the position that was at the center of the scandals over patient wait times and data manipulation that erupted last year.
VA Secretary Bob McDonald has laid out a number of customer service goals and benchmarks in recent months, in an effort to rehabilitate the image and operations of VA’s medical services, which had suffered from the scandals.

LaVerne Council, CEO of Council Advisory Services, was nominated to take over as VA’s assistant secretary for information and technology. That post has been vacant for two years.
