Telecommunications technology has advanced dramatically since the award of Networx, the General Services Administration’s major telecom contract vehicle, but there are a few more years before another major shift is due.
GSA is preparing Network Services 2020 to take over from Networx, which expires in 2017. However, the transition to Networx from its own predecessor, FTS 2001, was difficult and took three years longer than planned, necessitating contract extensions to maintain services and raising costs.

The agency is taking lessons learned from that transition into the next one, said Mary Davie, assistant commissioner of the Integrated Technology Services office within GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service.
GSA is working closely with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), which plans to release the solicitation for its own Global Network Services contract vehicle later this year. The two agencies also collaborated on Networx.
