Government needs a forward-looking mobile plan allowing the federal workforce to work securely anywhere, anytime from any device, according to a post by Mary Davie, assistant commissioner for Integrated Technology Services at the Federal Acquisition Service, on the General Services Administration's Great Government through Technology blog.

The Office of Management and Budget's Mobile Services Category Team has been set up to accomplish that, believes Davie, looking at how to acquire, maintain and manage mobile services from her perspective of governmentwide IT Category Manager.

The cross-agency MSCT has been assembled to devise a governmentwide strategic plan increasing efficiency and savings while navigating mobile services acquisition.

To date, the MSCT has published a mobile services road map to assist agencies in developing core commodity services and agency-customized mobile applications that will conform to category management principles while assisting an increasingly agile, evolving workforce to achieve mission needs.

The MSCT has also prepared guidance to help agencies select, procure, manage and dispose of mobile devices while improving contractual terms and green initiatives. In addition, the MSCT will conduct a feasibility study for the possible use of a brokerage approach to agency mobile acquisition efforts.

Throughout all efforts, the MSCT promotes standardization, simplification, savings and insight to assure core product offerings reduce complexity and cost while promoting healthy competition. Value could be further maximized by MCST efforts to improve mobile reporting and data management.
