AWS adds new GovCloud region for East Coast agencies

Federal agencies and vetted organizations in government-regulated industries will have additional redundancy, data durability and resiliency when Amazon Web Services adds a new region to its AWS GovCloud (US) network. 

Announced during the AWS Public Sector Summit held in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 13, AWS GovCloud (US-East) will add infrastructure to Amazon Web Services' isolated host for sensitive data and regulated workloads when it becomes operational in 2018. 

AWS GovCloud (US-East) will comply with the requirements of FedRAMP, International Traffic in Arms Regulations, NIST, Department of Defense Impact Levels 2-4, DFARs, IRS1075 and Criminal Justice Information Services. It will provide proximity for such current customers as the Department of Veterans Affairs, General Services Administration, Air Force, Department of Justice and more.

The first AWS GovCloud region, AWS GovCloud (US-West), was launched on the west coast in 2011. It was announced at the Public Sector Summit that this region has now gained Amazon Rekognition, an AI service to add image analysis, classification and visual search to applications. Deep-learning technologies detect objects, scenes, faces and inappropriate content in images, which can be tagged for keyword searches. The pay-as-you-go model only charges for images analyzed and face metadata stored.
