Ask Reg: Do I retain annual leave when I retire from federal service?

The following is a question submitted by a reader to Federal Times columnist Reg Jones, a charter member of the senior executive service and the resident expert on federal employee retirement issues.

A Fed Times reader asks:

“If I retired on Jan. 31, 2027, would I lose any annual leave from the previous year?”

"Use or lose" annual leave is the amount of accrued annual leave that is in excess of the employee's maximum annual leave limitation for carry over.

Reg’s response:

You would only lose any hours of annual leave that exceeded the annual carry-over limit. For most employees that’s 240 hours.
